Easy ways to improve English start with focus. You should take a deep breath and ask yourself how dedicated you are to becoming proficient in English. Assessing this will give you an idea of where to start and steps to take to reach your goal.

Do you need to learn English, say, for your work or to travel or to live in an English-speaking country? Or is learning English a fanciful idea about which you’re not too serious? Your motivation weighs heavily on your approach to the language as well as how far you will likely go.

English is the most widely spoken language in the world with over 1,130 million speakers. Its language family is Germanic, a sub-family of Indo-European. And it may surprise you to know that there are over 7,100 languages spoken in the world today  (Klappenbach).

“It’s [English is] also the official language of the sky – all pilots have to speak and identify themselves in English” (Klappenbach, 2022).

In considering easy ways to improve English, this article will assume you have a strong motivation for learning the language. With this assumption, let’s look at some of the suggestions that follow in order to start kicking the can down the road. As you are doing now, you can read articles on easy ways to improve English. Here are other ideas:

  • Hang out with native English speakers
  • Watch fun videos in English
  • Learn songs in English
  • Play word games, such as Scrabble
  • Take English classes
  • Read English books—start with the easy stuff

Not everyone needs a private tutor. People learn in different ways, but if you feel a tutor can help, then obtain one. A tutor can pinpoint your strengths and weaknesses and can tailor her teaching to address your individual needs.

Learning English means learning words. They do not have to be fancy, but they do need to be clear in order to get your point across and to understanding someone else’s point.

Which one of these sentences is clearer?

  • Janet does not pontificate in expressing her sentiments. She ameliorates her life by habituating herself to the aggregation of the upper echelon.

  • Janet is clear in expressing her opinions. She adds to her life by keeping company with a classier group of people.

Of course you would likely agree that the second sentence is clearer, simpler.

Sure, there are people—scholars and lawyers, for instance—who use sophisticated words. Notwithstanding, many people find it difficult to understanding their verbal and/or written communication. Some authors also use sophisticated words but are able to put them in context so that the meaning is not lost on their readers.

Grow your vocabulary by jotting down words that appeal to you through your readings or conversations. Put these words in your notepad, for instance, so that they will be handy. Study them. Use them often. Make them a fiber of your being.

Someone may laugh at the way you pronounce English words. This may be extremely intimidating to the point that you may want to give up. Realize that there will be ups and downs in your progress, good days and not so good days. It happens to us all in whatever challenges we have. Muster the courage to persevere.

Sometimes we have to spend time with a feeling of discouragement. Do that but don’t wallow in it. When you’re ready, shake off the discouragement, and continue your journey.

You will someday tell your grandchildren how you struggled with the English language and how you kept going to master it. This will serve as encouragement for them when they need it.

Becoming motivated and staying motivated are crucial factors in learning English, so is hiring a tutor, if needed. Again, build that vocabulary, and try to avoid being intimidated. If you’re able, laugh it off. These are some of the easy ways to improve English. Search for other ways.
